The festival, which was created in 1976 by the celebrated composer Hans Werner Henze, has relaunched its key features: the interaction between artists of international prestige and young talent, and attention to schooling in the various professions of the arts and performance. It is this very simple idea that has allowed Montepulciano to establish its signature style in the whole of Europe thanks to Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte.

August - Old Town
The Bruscello is a medieval festival with songs and music performed every year in the Tuscan town of Montepulciano, on or around 15 August. The word comes from arboscello, meaning small tree - one of the players always carries a small tree. Its origins, probably pagan, are unknown but it has been performed here for the last 500 years, and in its current form for the last 60 or so.

The Bravio delle Botti is an annual event which takes place in Montepulciano on the last Sunday of August.
It is an exciting competition between the 8 contrade ( districts)of the town which seek to win the Bravio , the painted cloth banner depicting the city 's patron saint .
The winners receive the Bravio at the end of the race in Piazza Grande..
The contestants for each contrada push huge and heavy " botti" ( wooden wine barrels ) for about 1 mile uphill along the narrow streets of Montepulciano's historical center..Each barrel is pushed by 2 strong pushers up to the line which is in front of the beautiful Duomo in Piazza Grande
